Some Belgian and Dutch media cite a Dutch study concerning the doubts about the environmental benefits of electric vehicles. Fine particle emission due to brake abrasion and tire wear of electric vehicles are the causes. However a scientifically sound comparison should be based on a thorough Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). When taking into account realistic emissions of regulated pollutants such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) that is measured at the tailpipe, plus unregulated pollutants such as non-exhaust PM as well as the emissions due to the production of the fuel or electricity, the picture completely changes in favour of Electric Vehicles.
