Dr. ir. Jelle Smekens acquired his double degree of Master in Electro-Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering of the ULB (Université Libre de Bruxelles) and the VUB (Vrije Universiteit Brussel). His main expertise is the development of models for Li-Ion batteries on cell level: electrochemical models, electric models, State-of-Health and State-of-Charge estimation. As a doctoral researcher he has developed advanced characterization techniques and corresponding models to acquire input parameters for electrochemical modeling of cells and electrodes. The models are used to assess the effect of manufacturing parameters on the overall cell performance. This research was done in collaboration with Umicore NV under the umbrella of an IWT Baekeland-Mandate. Currently he has the position of Postdoctoral Fellow at ETEC dept. and MOBI research center at VUB were he is involved in national and international research projects aiming to develop sustainable batteries.
